Mild at first
Colder again later

Gales developing, rain and snow midweek onward

A week of contrasting weather lies ahead. A rather benign and mild start to the week is expected, with some stubborn fog patches in central & southern Britain. Things are likely to become much more active during midweek as low pressure moves in from the Atlantic, bringing a threat of gales, heavy rain and possible widespread snowfall across northern Britain later in the week.

Monday 04/12/17
High pressure centred toward the south-west brings a fairly quiet day. A lot of cloud, and some lingering mist and fog patches for inland central & southern England. Patchy rain or drizzle around coasts in the north-west, otherwise dry. Best of any bright or sunny spells to the east of high ground in northern Britain. Light west to northwesterly winds, freshening in the north. Fairly mild, 7 to 11C, cooler where fog persists.

Tuesday 05/12/17
High pressure will lie toward the south of Britain. Most areas should remain in mild air, perhaps very mild for some eastern areas. A risk of stubborn fog patches for low lying central & southern areas. Otherwise, some good spells of sunshine. Low pressure and fronts pass to the north of Scotland bringing some rain to the far north & west of the British Isles, with brisk winds developing. Temperatures 7 to 10C, but cooler in fog.

Wednesday 06/12/17
Precise detail remains uncertain. Fronts toward the north & west bring rain, and potentially snow for northern Scotland, which may sink further southwards. Windy, with an increasing risk of gales in the west, perhaps stormy by Wednesday night. Many central and southern regions should stay dry and mild. Cloudy in the west, brighter east. Highs 10 or 11C south, 5 to 8C north, coldest Scotland.

Thursday 07/12/17
Some uncertainty, but an unsettled picture is likely, as low pressure moves across the country. Heavy rain and gales, and a risk of colder air digging in quickly from the north, producing snow across northern Britain & Ireland. High seas around many coasts. Highs 2 to 5C north, 7 to 10C south.

Friday 08/12/17
Turning colder for all as low pressure moves eastwards into Scandinavia, allowing northerly winds to return. Some heavy showers focused around coastal districts exposed to the wind, snow and hail to low levels. Risk of gales and heavy seas. Highs 2 to 6C.

Saturday 09/12/17
A cool north to north-westerly flow may continue, bringing sunny spells and scattered wintry showers. Pressure may build from the west. Becoming less cold, 3 to 7C.
