Week ahead - March 11, 2018
Rain, heavy showers
Wettest south-west

Issued: 1000hrs Sunday 11th March 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Mild this week, but risk becoming colder next weekend

An unsettled and slow-moving weather pattern affects the British Isles this week. Low pressure parked to the west throws fronts across the country, producing frequent heavy bursts of rain, most persistent toward the south-west. Fairly mild temperatures thanks to brisk southerly winds, and frost rare.

Wednesday 14/03/18
Low pressure centred to the south-west pushes fronts north-eastwards across Britain. Rain on and off, locally persistent and heavy toward the west & south-west. Most prolonged falls focused over south-west England and south Wales. Eastern areas may escape drier. Blustery south to southeasterly winds, up to gale force in the south-west. Fairly mild, reaching 10 to 14C.

Thursday 15/03/18
Broadly unsettled, with low pressure focused toward the south-west. Belts of heavy rain or showers pivoting northwards across the British Isles, merging into constant heavy rain for many hours in the south-west. Windy, south or south-easterlies, gales in exposed areas. Occasional brighter periods in eastern counties. Highs 9 to 13C, coolest where rain persists.

Friday 16/03/18
Staying mixed, as low pressure remains to the west of Britain & Ireland. Areas of rain or showers, although central-eastern England may escape drier. Locally heavy bursts of rain, most widespread by the afternoon in central areas, but quite hit and miss. Fairly mild with south or south-easterly winds, although less windy than midweek for most. Highs 9 to 13C.

Saturday 17/03/18
Further areas of rain are expected, although detail is uncertain. Little change to the prevailing weather pattern, although a chance of winds turning south-east to easterly, which may bring cooler air toward the UK. Highs 7 to 11C.

Sunday 18/03/18
An east to south-easterly breeze, probably becoming cooler. Low pressure remains nearby to the south-west, whilst high pressure builds over Scandinavia. Areas of showers, but less widespread than previous days. Highs 6 to 10C.

Monday 19/03/18
A risk of becoming widely chillier as winds threaten to turn easterly, although some uncertainty. This may bring wintry showers to eastern coasts. Brighter in the west. Highs 5 to 10C.
