Week ahead - March 16, 2018
Several dry days
Temperatures recovering

Issued: 1000hrs Friday 16th March 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Hard frosts early in the week

A very cold weekend lies ahead, as a renewed easterly wind influences the British Isles. Snow showers will be locally frequent, giving accumulations and a risk of ice. Next week will see high pressure nearby, resulting in several days of dry weather. It will remain cool, but temperatures will recover slowly.

Monday 19/03/18
High pressure resides to the north-west of Britain, bringing a dry day to most of the country. Rare brief drizzly showers or snow flurries around coasts in the east & south. Fairly cloudy skies, but some sunny breaks, best toward the west. A cool north-easterly breeze, strongest in southern regions, but light winds for Scotland and Northern Ireland. A frosty start. Chilly, but less cold than the weekend, highs 3 to 6C.

Tuesday 20/03/18
Staying dry but cool for most places. A zone of high pressure drifts across Ireland, becoming centred toward the south-west later. Chance of local drizzly showers affecting eastern England, also the Northern Isles. Variable cloud and some sunshine. A general north to north-easterly breeze, but winds mostly light. Strongest in the far south-east. Frosty for some in the morning. Highs 5 to 8C.

Wednesday 21/03/18
The wind turns westerly as high pressure slips away to the south-west. Fronts moving into Scotland bring some rain to the West Highlands, and patchy drizzle for Northern Ireland and north-west England. Otherwise, most places should stay dry with occasional sunshine, best in eastern England. Fairly light winds, but may freshen in the north. Temperatures reaching 7 to 10C.

Thursday 22/03/18
Details uncertain, but a general north-west to south-east split is likely. The north-west is likely to see cloud and outbreaks of rain, whilst central and south-eastern Britain should be drier with some sunshine. Temperatures nearer to average, 7 to 12C.

Friday 23/03/18
Low pressure over the Atlantic is expected to encroach in from the west. Rain becoming persistent for Ireland and western Britain. Drier toward the east. Brisk south to southwesterly winds. Highs 8 to 12C.

Saturday 24/03/18
Fronts passing eastwards bring some rain, followed by showers. A risk of being fairly unsettled, with blustery winds and some frequent rain, or snow over northern hills. Highs 7 to 10C, perhaps cooler.
