Wintry weather
Risk of snow

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 6th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

A wintry spell of weather and the threat of snow

Colder weather to come through the coming week with the risk of some sleet and snow thrown in for good measure. Sunday is the focus day for the risk of snow somewhere in the UK and Ireland although deciding where this will be is proving rather a challenge. It is cold into next week too with a further risk of some snow showers interspersed with blue skies but also longer spells of rain, sleet or snow.

Saturday 9/12/17
Northwesterly winds are likely to continue, bringing frequent snow to eastern coastal districts, plus northern Scotland. A few bands of showers may also affect some Irish sea coasts, perhaps running into north Wales and the northwest Midlands. Pressure is likely to build toward the west as the day progresses. Feeling bitterly cold in the wind. Frosty where sheltered. Highs 1 to 4C.

Sunday 10/12/17
Confidence in the forecast for Sunday remains low. Low pressure and fronts are expected to be moving in from the Atlantic bring a risk of sleet and snow through southern Ireland, southern Wales and southwest England. However, more persistent sleet and snow affecting the Midlands and northern England with the threat of snowfall accumulation here. Drier and cold further north. Highs at 0 to 2C for most, but 7C in the far southwest.

Monday 11/12/17
Low pressure to the south on Monday drags an area of rain, sleet and snow away with it. Following is expected to be a cold northerly wind with snow showers on coasts and hills. Still much uncertainty in the detail with temperatures at 0 to 3C.

Tuesday 12/12/17
Tuesday may see lower pressure drifting into Ireland bringing some rain, sleet or snow here. Elsewhere in the UK it is likely to be a drier day, staying cold with bright or sunny spells and an occasional shower. Highs at 1 to 5C.

Wednesday 13/12/17
The risk of some wintry weather again as low pressure passes east. This is going to be followed by sunny spells and wintry showers, some of them heavy at times, especially on coasts and hills. Highs at 1 to 3C.

Thursday 14/12/17
Staying cold on Thursday with some wintry showers. Most are likely in the north and east. Western areas may be brighter with sunny spells here. Highs at 1 to 4C.
